An interesting possibility, is that closet centrists want to classify Sanders as ‘that nutcase’. So they write off the possibility that there are scared, low information voters who now think that the only candidate who is going to shake things up is Trump, and to whom Sanders could honestly provide a real alternative.

More than 500,000 people who just donated to him for the first time probably disagree and that is more of a barometer of his huge swath of support than someone’s opinion with no backing links/references commenting on Splinter. 

The difference with Bernie, he can be moved left. Other candidates seem to waffle when they do. Also, Bernie has a history of over 40 years of working for left of center politics. What House leadership are trying to avoid, is overplaying their hand.  Careful, deliberative processes avoid the whole ‘rush to judgement’ meme that plays so well with the Republican base right now.  Frankly, I think they are doing as well as can be expected, given the circumstances.
