It's a very good game. The biggest problem with regards to the auction house is that it's far far easier to just go to the auction house every time you want better equipment than hoping for something good to drop that will actually be usable.

Just play it through once, it's pretty fun. Most people, when it first came out, really enjoyed it...then they decided to replay it through on harder difficulties and then the problems arose. I'm not a hardcore Diablo player at all, so I just played it once, but it's a pretty fun ARPG/dungeon crawler.
