I think, at the time, the assumption was that the two streaming services would just be folded over. Not that Discovery would burn HBO Max/Warner Bros. to the ground and then slap the HBO Max name on Discovery+.

I don’t have Hulu, so I don’t care what ads they run. But it’s amusing to see some people assuming that if Hulu doesn’t run these ads, people will never, ever learn about gun control, abortion laws, LGBT rights, etc. and will immediately vote Republican.
