I personally don't prioritize smiling on the subway, and I've seen and interacted with a lot of weirdos on the subway; but they always move away from me to the next jolly individual.

The deal with smiling for a lot of people is the fact that it is considered an invitation for weirdos to mess with you, and the city has shit-load of weirdos. Public smiling is one of those small-town characteristics that does not translate to the city/urban areas.
