This weekend I will mostly be wrapping up this year’s playthrough of Dragon Age: Origins. I’m up to the pre-Landsmeet stuff - rescuing the queen and escaping the prison (I’ll surrender to Ser Cauthrien rather than fight my way out, as I like to do this bit). I’m playing an Arcane Warrior tank this time around, so by

I loved the hell out of the original THPS on the PlayStation back in my university days. So many nights wasted eating curry pizzas, drinking cans of Boddington’s Cream Ale and round robin HORSE tournaments, and so many curses if you accidentally double pressed the ‘X’ to start, because then you’d immediately do an Olli

Now playing

Me and my cohort have been playing Jackbox Party Pack 6 lately. Caveats: we are definitely not “PG” or particularly gifted improvisors:

THPS certainly paved the way for a new genre of timed, goal-based extreme sports games, but the one that really resonated with me was Dave Mirra’s Freestyle BMX 2. I was excited when they announced another sequel, unperturbed when they decided to partner with Scores and add stripper cut scenes, only mildly put off

Man, Fire Emblem: Three Houses really eats up your time. I’ve got all the Black Eagles in Intermediate classes now, the plot is starting to get heavy, and Bernadette remains a shrieking shrinking violet despite now also being the fucking Angel of Death.

That’s hilarious because outside of the Defend idea, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. Coming back to the beginning, it’s really obvious how the fights are set up and the path to quickly get it done. Between that and the rotations I was already building in the grind on the other playthrough, I think this one should

Sandbox games pass the time well enough. I’m trying to 100% the maps on Spider-Man PS4, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Assassin’s Creed Origins still. (Also because I need to clear the hard drive space for a certain game coming soon.) But they don’t have to be open worlds to monopolize my time, the maps in Hitman 2 are

I decided it would be a good idea to go back and finish the unfinished with Final Fantasy X. I left off at the fight in Gagazet with what turned out to be a severely underleveled party two years ago. Didn’t realize how badly underleveled they were until recently when I looked up strategies and people suggested I use

For me a good comfort game offers an interesting World to revisit.

Cookie Clicker! Game play leave something to be desired, but who not would want to play game where you end up with billions

Minecraft has been a big one for me recently, but in terms of something I can always fuck around in for an hour to feel nothing but mild amusement, it’s hard to beat Just Cause 3. It’s always there, it’s always great, and it’s always exactly what I want.

My go-to comfort game is Civ III. Not any of the other Civ games, just Civ III (although I’ve heard the other ones are really good, and i may check them out one day). When playing III, I put it on easy, make it 80% islands, and only placing 1 other nation on the map (usually Rome). I never attack anyone, and instead

I know I’m showing my age here, but my comfort game is the old NES Bionic Commando. Sometimes I just want to zone out and play and I fire up an emulator and settle in. There’s something zen-like about the mechanics. If I’m not feeling like a Bionic Commando run, Contra is my other go to for the same reason.

My wife is playing through the Uncharted series as her first shooter and I forgot how much I love the series.

Your point that Hollow Knight (a top 5 of all time for me) feels familiar yet new with the (free!) new content brings me to my ideal comfort game: Stardew Valley. I had thought I had finished everything I wanted to do in the game and shelved it, but quarantine has brought it right back and been a perfect time to

In terms of sort-of-current games, it’s Civilization V, but just for a quick diversion it’s Scorched Earth (through the Internet Archive— the link’s below) all the way. Partly for that heavy dose of nostalgia, partly because it’s tremendous fun.

I am fortunate enough to be working from home with a lovely MacBook with admin rights. I promptly grabbed a PS1 emulator, and am currently going through Tony Hawk 2, 100%ing everyone to unlock Skate Heaven. I’m on Eric Koston now. Christ, it is so comforting.

Persona 5 Royal has been perfect comfort food the past week or so I’ve been playing it. Lots of social interaction with different characters, the combat is fun, there is so much to do and all of it is interesting. And the music kicks ass

Okami for me. Beautiful, timeless art style, soothing music, not too challenging and the characters are charming.

Witcher 3. It’s always great to catch up with Geralt. And Red Dead Redemption 2. Both those game worlds feel real no matter how often you visit.
