They are absolutely running experiments ON Dr. Leo. For sure, that’s why we never see him, and they are trying to be slick by mixing those shots in with the flashbacks

So I’ve never watched a minute of any of the animated shows, but this show is really good. I might have picked up enough stuff about the cartoons thru just pop culture osmosis that I've never felt lost when things from them pop up (which has only been this season).
