Because they’re prone to sticking? Carbureted motorcycles use them as well, but bikes have a second throttle cable for closing. Ask the Honda guys with slide throttle vacuum secondaries how fun those are to get running right. Slides are also twice the size for a given opening area, and I would imagine more expensive

Nothing happened to it. See: Sheepdogs, Cancer Bats, Billy Talent, Monster Truck, Arkells, Big Wreck, Sloan, The Trews, Sam Roberts, etc. Some older names on that list, but I’m referring to their recent work, all still making solid albums and touring. On that note, The Tea Party is still touring.

I really like Pontiac cars from the mid 80s to the early 2000's. Not just the Fiero. I’d daily any Grand Am, Grand Prix, Firebird, Bonneville, etc from that era. Sunbird, Sunfire, Trans Sport, Firefly, bring it on. Love ‘em all.

Ooh, an opportunity to bring up Fieros! The battery isn’t even under the decklid, it’s under a louver/vent thing, so every time it rains, the battery gets directly soaked. But it’s a battery, so it’s fine. First picture off google I found, missing said vent thing (picture may not work, got kinja’d):

I definitely don’t weld professionally, but my homegamer experience, red (thoriated) rods just work better for me. They run nice and hot so they’re good for twitchy guys like me when you’re welding standing on your head and you dip the tip, strike an arc again and it cleans off the contamination. The new purple rods

Truth. Industrial coatings and linings guy here. It’s too bad red lead is so bad for everything, because hot damn if it isn’t a good anti-corrosive. Always seems to be that way, lead, asbestos, thoriated tungsten, I’m sure there’s more.

This. As I’m sure Mr. Tracy can also attest to, imperial unit conversions in thermodynamics suck. Likely the most scarring assignment I had in Uni was the same Thermo question twice, one in SI and once in imperial.

Pig pimples basically describes the customary/imperial system. Let’s be honest here, hogsheads are a unit, it’s not far off.

Love the description of the enthusiast “wave”, definitely stealing that.

Starred for the Fiero having a larger trunk than something. Imma add that fact to my annoying Fiero trivia collection.

Looks like he took it off a sweet jump. Was about to complain about the truck being framed right out of the shot, then realized it’s a 360 video. *hangs head in shame*

Pleased to make the acquaintance of your burner account, haha. Good to see some car kinship, I waved at another guy driving a Fiero once, he didn’t even blink. C’mon man, crack a smile, we’re driving the same weird old car.

Why no love for the Quad 4? I haven’t had the chance to drive one, but on paper it seems like quite the achievement for the time, that was a lot of power from not a lot of motor. Twice the power as the Tech IV (Iron Duke) with less displacement.

Fair point, it wasn’t literally a truck motor yet when put in the Fiero, but it ran like one. All torque, low revving, not much power, sounded like a tractor. If only they’d kept making the Fiero long enough to stick a Quad 4 HO in. Combined with the ‘88 suspension, might have gave the MR2 more of a run for its money.

A new Fiero would be interesting from todays GM. They’re in a much better place regarding small cars that they were in 84. The Fiero came out with the Iron Duke truck motor because... there was nothing much better to put in it. The V6 came out in ‘85, and 140 HP was far better than the Iron Duke with 92 Hp, but think

The safety valve venting is an excellent point, especially if overfilled by a sleepy gas station teenager, then left in a warm vehicle. Had that happen once, thankfully it was the sun shining on it at a campground that warmed it up, so it wasn’t enclosed.

Your grandad is the bomb, totally stealing that line, ha.

It saddens me that I could only star this comment once. So consider my comment a second star, and you have yourself a lovely day.

Hey, I did that! $500, get it running, drive for a while, burn all the oil, swap in a V6, good stuff. Stay away from the 84's though, they’re weird in ways you don’t want. That doesn’t look like an 84 though, based on the decklid vents and the bulge, so you’re safe there. The wing mounts are a sad addition though.
