It doesn’t help anyone to escalate a situation involving a suicidal person holding a gun and holding hostages. Words matter.

It doesn’t matter how many times she threatened suicide, and it doesn’t matter if this was old hat for this couple. It is never ok to tell a suicidal person to kill themselves. Do you even mental health?
I think that we live in a gun-crazy time with next to zero mental health supports, and everyone should know how to handle crisis situations. We can disagree, that’s ok with me. But I stand by my statement that it is never, ever advisable to anger a shooter in a hostage situation by telling them to kill themselves.…
I am serious. It is never advisable to tell a crazy person with a gun to kill themselves. It only makes them angry. It doesn’t turn out well for anyone. Have you ever heard of police talking down a mass shooter by telling them to kill themselves and save everyone the trouble? Suicide hotlines? Any mental health…
And you do have an idea? Are you the friend quoted in this article?
Any man who says to a clearly mentally ill person that they should “Just shoot yourself. Make it easy on all of us, just shoot yourself” gets zero sympathy from me. I hope he rots in hell too.
All men must dye
I taught social science as a TA and adjunct for 10+ years, and my evals fell into two basic camps: sexual harassment or super bitch. My (male) supervisors joined in the harassment and told me to be flattered, and then told me to stop being a bitch. I hate, HATE academia. HATE.
When everyone is a social justice warrior, and they all get on their soapboxes as often as possible, people like me (as a professor and as a student) who seem to be “openly hostile to discussions of social justice within the classroom” are really just sick to death of every discussion inside AND outside the classroom…
I had an AP Chem teacher in high school whose wife had just left him for a university professor. I was one of two female students in the class. He lectured us about evil women and how much he wanted to fuck the hot PETA protestors at McDonalds instead of teaching us chemistry. He got a lot of chuckles and high fives…
Making mistakes is a fundamental part of learning. If people aren’t allowed to make mistakes and learn from them, they aren’t being educated.
Hell, as a non-parent and a college instructor for 10 years even I know that this is unacceptable behavior. I would never, NEVER treat my adult students this way, and the fact that these teachers are aiming their vitriol at children is just plain abusive.
She is a child. YOU are a fucking idiot.
Thank you so much for this. My dad has suffered from chronic pain for decades due to undiagnosed Crohns that resulted in two major bowel resections, ulcerative colitis, fistulas, fissures, blockages, incontinence, malnutrition, osteoporosis, amputations, and on and on. The guy went from being a hearty blue collar…
The kids didn’t even know about Captain America. Their dad was trying to pump them up for super heroes and they were not interested. That’s what I get for playing it cheap and going to a Saturday lunchtime showing. At least there was beer!
I shop at Walgreens a lot, and I get a total of $100 in rebates during the year.
Same boat here. I feel your pain. I got really good at shoving my way through to the front.
I went to see Captain America: Civil War a few weeks ago. The family in front of us had little kids who got bored during movie, and the parents pulled out three iPads on full brightness and let the kids play games - with the sound on (!!!!!!!*&%&^$&$%#^%#&)
Whoop-de-doooo for you. Cell phones used during shows do bother a lot of people. As a short person, I can’t even see the stage when the people in front of me hold up their phones to record video.
There are rules about turning off phones in movie theaters because jackasses who text during the film ruin the experience…
I do this crazy thing called corkboards and push pins. Then I watch Matlock and eat dinner at 4pm.
