I am so sorry. I haven’t talked to my family in any meaningful way since the summer of 2016. It’s one thing to have different opinions, it’s another to have a close family member constantly bait and push you. It’s like they can’t stand to not have their opinions mirrored back at them.

Ugh, I’m so sorry. Thank you for sharing this. I hope you get your dad back one day. Your dad’s story sounds so familiar from what we can observe happening to many people who become radicalized: a person becomes more isolated from others, then something comes along and fills that void, messages repeated over and over

Speaking as someone who is the same age as Chelsea Clinton and frequently got compared to her in the looks department, it was not good for my self esteem to hear comments like that.

I don’t really speak to my father anymore. At one time, we were great friends. We didn’t have to agree on everything, but we could find common ground on a great many subjects.

Similar to what you say about your father, mine has also always been known for his intellect. He home schooled my half brother and half sister

He was all “so what? Smoking rules” until he got the word that his lung cancer really was incurable and going to kill him, and it finally sunk in that there were going to be consequences in his life he couldn’t buy or bully his way out of. And even then, he decided to remain an asshole until the end.

He claimed that Michael J. Fox was faking his Parkinsons for publicity.

I used to work graveyard shift in a factory an hour from my apartment on rural roads. I would leave Rush on during the drive home to keep my angry enough to stay awake - as a result, I am intimately familiar with his predatory hucksterism.

I am similarly reminded of a different quote.  When Kenneth Lay, evil overlord of Enron, died, Henry Rollins quipped:  “Good.  Stay dead, motherfucker.”

He was dogshit, spoke dogshit, and made money off dogshit people. He repeatedly made fun of everyone not fat, white, and him. He routinely vocalized hate of everyone from Dems to Drug Users - until it was actually him and suddenly he wanted to be loved for ‘suffering from an affliction’ - that affliction being jamming

My earliest memory of him is when he repeatedly bullied Chelsea Clinton - who was 12 or 13 at the time - by referring to her as the White House dog. More than once.

I’m glad to hear lung cancer has won its battle with Rush Limbaugh.

Yah, my usual reply when someone of his ilk dies...

Folks on Twitter putting it better than I could.

In times like these I am always reminded of the famous Bette Davis quote on the passing of Joan Crawford:

Letterman is also a recovering alcoholic which makes it even more frustrating. He seemed bewildered that while she’s going through a really rough time and about to head to rehab that she’s making the rounds promoting a movie. He also seemed to have a fondness for her, but just couldn’t stop himself from picking on her

I’ve heard he wanted to pal around with the cast during Buffy. They had to work really long hours during the week, and come weekend they were expected to come to his house for improv theatre. The ones who agreed got to keep their jobs, and the ones who turned him down had their characters killed. Sarah Michelle Gellar

There were a few things. He basically cut every PoC except Jason Momoa out of the film - all of Cyborg’s backstory, plus Iris West. Generally he was accused of being abusive to cast and crew. IIRC Momoa said some “serious shit” went down with him.

right? "what are they rehabbing this time" like, wtf, Dave? I've always hated Letterman and never understood why he's so revered by comics and late night folks. he's a cringy hack, and he was never funny or charming in any way. Craig Ferguson for the win, always.

As a recovering alcoholic, I am rage-crying through that interview with Lindsay Lohan. If anyone had treated me that way before I entered rehab, I’m not sure I’d have made it. Lohan is surrounded by enablers and toxic people. Achieving longterm sobriety is a miracle for anyone, but under her current circumstances it

Said this on the A.V. Club before, but if I never hear the names Joss Whedon or Zack Snyder ever again, it’ll be too goddamn soon.
