So don't take your charges to the computers put aside for adult usage. If you see some perv looking up obscene content that is in full view of your charges, complain to the librarian. Something will be done. Maybe they'll kick him or her off or move them to where they can't be seen, but librarians are very receptive

I would suggest you familiarize yourself with the ALA and the ethics of this profession before you take up the flag for these librarians. Try googling "Library Bill of Rights".

Except porn is legal, and public exposure is not.

I was just pointing out that "NSFW" is a loosely-defined standard. As is "porn". It's hard to define what makes something "nsfw" and it's hard to predict what some people will consider "porn".

Then deal.

And you do not have an inalieable right not to be offended.

To some people, that is informative or useful content.

The only thing I'm interested in unpacking is why you think your "right" not to be offended by other peoples' behavior or tastes supercedes their right to access whatever legal content they want in the library.

What if your job is a porn photographer?

Excuse me while I obliterate your straw man but I didn't say that what "these people" ( What people? The one guy at the Chinatown library?) was acceptable per se, merely that not all people caught doing this are shameless and disgusting as you propose.

Actually the purpose of the library is to provide all patrons with unrestricted access to information, freely. It is you who does not have a right to tell other people what they can access.

And?

Or what if that person is reading one of the NSFW Fleshbot posts on Jezebel?

What if the "porn" that a patron is complaining about are Mapplethorpe photos or Tom of Finland drawings?

Why do people keep bringing up public masturbators in this debate? Masturbating in public is illegal. Full stop. End of story. There is not a single library policy in this nation that dictates any library staff has to tolerate a public masturbator. I can't speak for other libraries but I know that at my library people

If they're using a computer that is not visible by other patrons or those in the children's area, then they're not creating an uncomfortable environment for anyone. Obviously a situation where children or others are exposed to porn is an issue that requires librarian intervention but otherwise, who cares? And who are

Andrew Carnegie's philosophies are not the basis for what's studied in library school, believe it or not. I don't think he imagined that so many libraries he funded would one day become places where people went to check their email/facebook and play Farmville either but I still think people should be allowed to do

I am a librarian so I will relieve you the duty of thinking you're arguing anything on my behalf, thanks.

But it's pr0n! And these homeless dudes who want titty shots are oppressing women! And apparently some of us think that the First Amendment protects masturbating in public! THINK OF THE CHILDREN! Wait, no — think of the poor librarians who need our help! Because everyone knows that librarians love it when "concerned

Ahem. Don't you mean "Liberry"?
