The Raspberry Pi only boots from an SD card. You can connect an external SSD via one of the USB ports but the Pi will still need to boot off the SD card. Also programs install on the SD card so unless you are going to use the external drive for media (music/movies/etc.) the external SSD won’t be used.

Two different kinds of flash are used for the SSD vs the thumb drives. One is dirt cheap and is slower and has a lower life expectancy.

Google is hyping this as the only product or the best solution when VR rigs have been around for quite a while. Many of them are much cheaper. Tell me...can you afford 16 Go Pros ? Wouldn’t a Nikon with a fisheye lens and EasyPano or VideoStitch be alot cheaper ?
