I hadn’t thought to compare this to the Coens. It is really, really, really good though.

There are other directors for whom there’s a general consensus on their worst film (like Spielberg with 1941 or Always), but you’re the first person I’ve read nominate a worst Kurosawa. I’ve personally seen Rashomon, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Ran, which all worked at least…
I was unaware of the Tom Jones song and thought the Red Army Choir was covering Flipper:
Wikipedia lists five on the disambiguation page.
I’m waiting for someone to adapt Akutagawa’s “Rashomon”, for which they could use the title “In a Grove”. I’m also waiting for someone to film Alan E. Nourse’s The Blade Runner (or Burroughs’ adaptation of that), which I believe Ridley Scott still holds the rights to, but “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” would…
I believe Kurosawa said Yojimbo was inspired by Dashiell Hammet’s “The Glass Key”, although most people say it bears more resemblance to his “Red Harvest”.
Since the fourth season of Fargo is the putative reason for this series, I figured I’d share this line from a review today, which also describes much of the earlier seasons as well in my opinion:
He also made Haywire, and MMA is even further from acting. I still enjoyed it, but haven’t seen “The Girlfriend Experience” (movie or show).
I found it enjoyable enough, and now I figure I don’t need to see any actual Oceans movie (including the original Sinatra one).
I recall someone noting that one of the distinguished British punk bands from most of the groups that had come before them was their willingness to use heavy British accents rather than trying to appeal to the American market. So it is somewhat ironic that both Ahmed & Cooke are using American accents rather than…
Bates Motel was mostly Vera Farmiga’s show. Where Cooke really stood out is Thoroughbreds.
A good point about the purpose being to get a laugh. When someone objects to something “It’s all in good fun” can sometimes be a valid defense, but other times humor (which can depend on mockery) is no defense. In both cases someone can honestly say “I intended to make people laugh” but only some of the time could…
I guess I should look forward to season 3 then.
This is the one “Coen-esque” film you’ve covered so far which actually does belong in the same company as their work. And I would not have expected a movie like this from Raimi.
I found Conor Friedersdorf’s response to be interesting:
Is that Mandarin Chinese?
“Rush” has rather vocal fans, but I haven’t seen it.
You might not like the movie. It was written partly with the intent of subverting Hollywood’s depiction of criminals, such as the ones seen on the show, with what the Coens perceived as being closer to the truth. That’s why some people could mistakenly believe it was a true story, which really can’t be said of any…
Shouldn’t it really be considered “xenophobic” rather than just religiously bigoted? Mormons are basically indistinguishable from WASPs ethnically speaking.
