I like that they’re careful about consent, yet recognize that people with even quite significant impairments are in fact often still able to give it willingly. That is really nice and I think it should be a model for other facilities.

It may be different in other places, but I like how this can also address a larger issue about agency - people in nursing homes are still people and still capable of making decisions about their own life. I hope they’re also giving out condoms and safe sex talks!
I knew someone who, many years ago, died in a tragic way that was sensationalized all over the internet. That week following her accident was... there aren’t words to explain how horrible people can be behind the safety of their keyboards. And I am so sorry you and the people who loved her are going through it.
*crosses that off of possible-holiday-destinations list*
Thank you for being clear in what actually happened. I found out what happened early Saturday morning and the way the story is being covered by many outlets today is incredibly misleading and clearly click bait. I’ve always known I shouldn’t read comments but these articles have really brought that point home. I…
Seriously, if PETA is your source, don’t bother printing the information. They aren’t reliable. Hell, they stole a Virginia family’s pet dog, killed it and claimed it was a stray, and they are being sued for it (they were fined but it was a slap on the wrist for them). PETA kills animals.
“Industrial dairy farms are basically gulags.”
While that certainly necessitates the exploitation of natural resources (and pain/discomfort for humans and animals), I don’t doubt that it’s (theoretically) possible to reduce the harm being done by sacrificing some of our luxuries and creature comforts.
I don’t think that’s likely to happen - but it’s not just a…
Minus the milking, that’s the kind of life I could get used to...
Yeah, I get the impression that I’m in a minority of a minority, because I don’t have a problem with animals being killed for food (we all die) - it’s the suffering that bothers me - especially when it’s an entire life of discomfort and pain.
That’s why I have an IUD!
MAYBE WE SHOULDN’T HAVE SEVEN BILLION OF US, THO.
The reality of feeding 7 billion people, folks.
Okay, even found my burner password so I could comment. As a small scale dairy producer (goats!) and bee-keeper, all I can say is “know where your food comes from!!!” Yes, this shit happens. And it is all from large factory farms. This is not the status quo for all farmers or producers. Same goes for meat, if you’re a…
Yeah, and that goes for so many other products as well. I’ve largely kept myself in complicit ignorance, but I’m probably especially guilty when it comes to purchasing recreational electronics.
I toured a farm where they had an automatic milker that the cows could enter when they got tired of lounging around on rubber mats. They'd enter, get milked, and eat from a bin of overcooked baked goods the farm got from a local commercial bakery while being milked. Pretty good deal.
Yeah, I hate that the legitimate concerns get mixed up in hysteria over scary-sounding claims about substances.
Any food that has has any human touching it at one point or another has a chance to contain *eerie music* traces of human dna.
Same with the evil horror of fecal matter. Anything that was not grown, processed and kept in a complete sterile environment, can contain fecal matter.
Just like “toxins”, “chemicals” and other…
