This is the only reason we haven't left the office yet. Once everyone stops running around pinwheeling their arms and yelling, a newswire will go up.

Well, we aren't talking Cabin In The Woods bloody. It's more like something you'd see on a National Geographic special, but close up and with animals the film has spent some time getting viewers to care about, such that when they get mauled to death, it's pretty horrifying.

The idea is that each of the Guardians represents something like wonder or joy or innocence, and that if kids stop believing in them, it leaves more room for cynicism and defeat, and eventually fear. I was fine with the film not exploring that in much detail, and focusing on the more exciting bits.

Once in a while, particularly when it's something like Shrek 4 that's guaranteed to be one prolonged sigh. But I still really love animation, and if anything about a given film looks remotely interesting, I'm probably up for it. We're in a golden age of animation right now, and I love it.

No, @avclub-f121d09285898f1c66d66f1e6f0455a6:disqus , I got you. I do believe that critics are most useful if you can pin down where they're coming from and where and how your tastes and interests coincide with theirs. I'm agreeing with you, but trying to expand the range a bit past "If it's pretty, it gets an A."

It's pretty but very talky, then extremely intense and frightening, then extremely bloody and full of graphic animal death. YMMV depending on your daughter, but I'd definitely suggest watching it or reading the book before taking a child to see it.

Shyamalan was on board to direct at one point, but wound up not making the movie. For which I am profoundly glad, having seen how he handles this much CGI in Last Airbender and how he handles actors in everything else.

Half the movie is about how he prevents the tiger from eating him. You don't have to accept the story's explanations for how that happens, but you should maybe learn about them before dismissing them out of hand.
