Oh, it absolutely does. But it pretty quickly moves away from the shared world where they hang out. It doesn't just try to coast on nostalgia, so much as it throws in in-jokes mostly at the beginning.

It hadn't even occurred to me, but there's also a parallel there in that he's an amalgam personality who in the end becomes more powerful because of overlaid identities, but also loses himself as a result.
