I have to agree that it's no-contest here. Notepad++ is the only editor listed that is free and doesn't have a steep learning curve (Vim, Emacs). If it has a weakness it's that it isn't cross-platform. I use Notepad++ at work but I want to learn either Vim or Emacs for home.

I couldn't even get in to ubuntu.com. Don't even want to think what kind of http/ftp download speeds people are getting. I grabbed the torrent link from [distrowatch.com] and I'm getting 170. Gotta love bittorent.

I feel you man, except for the part about loving windows *_*. it took me 3 tries before I could use a Linux desktop full time (running Ubuntu 8.04 beta), and I still use XP for some things. It does take some [re]learning but in the end it's definitely worth it.
