to be clear, i think you are completely imagining your plight here — what i worry about personally is that “diverse reading years” will make white men feel “punished” but actually, slowly, quietly punish the people it’s supposed to help

yeah, that reaction — actual anger — is so misguided, and sucks, and makes me think of that harvard business school study that just came out about corporate diversity programs, where white men felt like the diversity program stood in for a parity that didn’t exist, and owned up to feeling like their place was…
Yeah, that’s what got me. And I read the rest of it with a side-eye so severe it gave me a headache.
I dunno. I’m with you. This felt really snarky:
It came across wicked snarky to me. Maybe I just need a glass of wine.
Did you know that the Hungarian language has no word for “cultural appropriation”?
Good heavens no, Lindy wouldnt have been so open about the flaws here. Most of the stuff she wrote was binary, black/white views
I really do enjoy reading your stuff, Jia.
She’s not saying that people can’t criticize her though or express their opinion if they find something she writes tasteless, just that she isn’t going to apologize for or explain her jokes. Satirical humor and commentary is really hard. Sometimes it works really well, and sometimes a joke doesn’t quite hit the mark.…
No, she means the general population being unable to differentiate between a joke that pokes fun at the asshole vs. a joke made at the expense of an entire group of people because the joke deals with race in some manner.
20 years ago: “I’m offended.”
An entirely reasonable comparison that any reasonable person would draw.
Do you know what a comments section is?
If she was performing for dos Santos, I’d agree. But if it’s for the people, well, I dunno - even oppressed people should be allowed to see their favorite musicians.
I have never for a single minute of my life been confused about who my mother is. Some teachers called her by Mrs My Surname but that’s very easy to correct. My mother is her own person, she has her own name why should I feel less connected to her because the word after my first name doesn’t match hers?
There isn’t any confusion with the kids though. I’ve not had any in six+ years of parenting. And I’m the primary caregiver doing all the things with them with a different name. It’s not an issue. We are not any less of a “unit”. That’s pretty offensive.
That’s not gonna happen.
Yes. The DNA was matched to another guy who looks a lot like him. That guy was already in prison for a rape he perpetrated after the one Avery was convicted of.
Thing is, the police who arrested him thought he was capable of doing the rape. He had other convictions of assault and animal cruelty. He was not a good guy.…
Avery was kind of a scumbag before he was convicted of rape. He covered a cat in oil and gas and threw it in a fire. He flashed a relative. There were other things.
Can’t wait for Natasha Vargas-Cooper to not really bother research the story then do a snarky, irritating ‘expose’ where she softballs/fails to properly question a crucial witness.
