Actually, gauging ones speed is a skill that can be learned. I was not very good at it, but it is an important skill in track driving. If you work on it you can get significantly better over time. I can now set my cruise within about 1 mph either way without looking.

AWD only helps you go. Winter tires help you stop and turn too. I consider both of those operations to be vital in winter driving.
