I’m making a distinction between pots and pans, here, though, because a pot (or kettle) you boil water in isn’t going to develop seasoning the way a pan you fry something in will. The whole cast-iron-pan-maintenance question is one we haven’t had to deal with for much more than a hundred years, even though (as you

Also on hand? Precious, the adorable dog that we assume is a lot happier living with her than Buffalo Bill.

Nope. They’re advertising for a raffle. https://www.tripstodiscover.com/2021-refresh-challenge-terms/ “Winner will be selected at random.”

Sure, but you have to admit that an American earnestly explaining something to a non-American that the non-Americans have been trying to explain to the Americans is DOUBLE AMERICAN.

Ah... under the circumstances, I believe the best advice would be to listen to some non-Americans about what’s happening in America.

Good news: that is not the case. The President does NOT have unilateral authority to prosecute war, or declare war, or order anyone to fire a weapon of war when there is no war on. POTUS commands the military, yes. But he still does not have the authority to issue illegal orders.

Career move. When you know you’re going to have a new boss in two weeks, it can be wise to quick make it look like you’re in favor of the same things the incoming boss is.

Indeed, Josh Hawley tweeted a twashbag of twaddle including the line “It’s a direct assault on the First Amendment” at 3:42 PM · Jan 7, 2021.

I don’t see why not. And these days it would be cheap enough to get enough electronics to monitor the temperatures in the interior and the outside and run the fans when it’s a few degrees cooler outside than in. Keeping out mice and bugs would just be a question of fine enough screening.

Heat island comes from total development, though; it doesn’t just scale linearly with residential population. Those ninety years also saw automobiles go from a hobby to a necessity—which required major paving everywhere—the skyline go from lumpy to spire-y, major increases in per-capita electricity and natural gas,

Two sides, same coin. Vented cabinets were cheap and didn’t work all that well; electricity and electrical appliances were expensive, but they worked. (One example of a 1927 refrigerator price: $215. Average “individual” [as opposed to corporate] net income in 1927 was $5496.73, at least among tax filers. The current

1930 was ninety years ago. In the intervening century, San Francisco has become rather more densely populated, and much more intensely built up. The urban heat island effect has kicked in.

The law in the USA is soldiers are required not to follow illegal orders. The expectation is the Joint Chiefs will see an order to fire nuclear weapons when there isn’t even a war on as illegal. Even if the odds are long, though, it’s heck of thing to bet the planet on...

Six hours with a can opener and the nuclear football.

Unambitious. My cat’s role model is the Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy. Appointed to the position, makes a lot of noise without communicating anything, no apparent understanding of democracy, and stares in bafflement at mice.

What a twist!
