Yeah, I’m really surprised EA didn’t push harder for that.

Oh yeah I got that, I just don’t get how it’s offensive.

Ahh, fair enough! :)

I’m with you on the whole treatment of Quiet thing. What I don’t get is why you’ve played it.

then why has she been called Aerith in every game since?”

It was Aeris in FF7, and to real FF7 fans it’ll always be Aeris.

How is that in any way offensive?

I thought she was pretty good looking, actually.

Sometimes you can embrace accidents, actually. Like if a character has a great name, and the “correct” name is horrible, you probably should just leave that alone instead of making it horrible for no reason.

Naw, sadly they caved to the demands of people who were fixated on calling her something that sounds horrible. :(

You’re right, the world is black and white and nobody has ever been localizing something for a different culture and said “You know what? I think this culture would respond better to this name.”

Project M popped up here a few times, I think. Also it seems like this is still going strong. 8-)

It clearly happened because her name was Aeris in the game. They were translating it and were like “You know what? Aerith is a horrible name. Let’s change it to Aeris, that sounds way better.” Happens all the time in translations.

It’s Aerith in the game’s code because you can’t just change variable names when you make a design decision and expect everything to still work. They probably started with Aerith, realized it was a stupid name, changed it to Aeris, but didn’t have the programmers go back and scrub clean every instance of ‘Aerith’

You’re missing his point. The literal translation is stupid, which is why they made it Aeris. Aeris is a significantly better name than Aerith.

Her name’s Aeris in FF7, and ‘Aerith’ is a stupid-sounding name, so why bring it up?

Yeah, I can’t get into it. Then again, I can’t watch competitive League anymore either, so maybe it’s me?

One of Iwata’s biggest strengths was understanding how best to communicate with the community and convey news in an exciting way. I was really hoping that his example had rubbed off on the other higher-ups at Nintendo, but this is kind of a bizarre step backwards to the 90’s era of gaming, when Nintendo let magazines

Hey now, he’s the best Smash 4 player in the world. Far from the best smash player period - that’s a much more interesting and nuanced discussion.

Nope. We’re just as guilty of this as they are.
