I'm going to college this fall and was wondering what things you deem essential. Do you think a laptop is absolutely necessary or will a really good smartphone suffice? Would you recommend a recorder for lectures? What did you bring to college?

Power menu is much better. Haven't tested it on Windows 7 though. But it works great on XP. Built in transparency changing, priority changing and always-on-top commands too. It's hard to go wrong with such an awesome small app.
What about using the Google login for each site? A super difficult password for one site (google) could login to millions of sites. I usually use my gmail id as my default email address (and I could care less as gmail does an EXCELLENT job at filtering spam) and I always wondered why there aren't "login with your…
Then do remember that after Vista, came Windows 7, the best of all Windows OS's so far. I know Ubuntu is going through a difficult phase. But do remember Canonical isn't like Microsoft and forcing you to upgrade. 10.10 is still good and will be till the "Windows 7" of Ubuntu comes out! :)

I think paperback books work too. Just make sure you leave a few pages on the sides to give a stiff "wall" to hold your stuff.
Actually, instead of making them to be "just right" you could just align them right ward. That way, I'd imagine they'd be better off. Just sayin" cause that's how I do it with rainmeter.
What about Gridmove? I disabled Aerosnap in favor of it because of its ease of use.
