We had an energy auditor come in to tell us what changes would make the most difference. He had cool machines to see where we were losing heat and gave us a list of everything we could do, how much it would cost, and what our return would be. We picked a few items with a great return, and our bills went down

@wmarcy: Many stores take few cents off your bill for each reusable bag you use. Mine is 3 cents per reusable bag.

I do this.

This has possibilities for people (parents, teachers) involved with youngish children who are already reading. I would feel more comfortable leaving my kids alone at the computer on certain sites (say, reading an article for homework) if I didn't have to worry about where they were going to end up.

I was thinking it wouldn't work because I would feel guilty if I won and my money didn't got to the charity of my choice, but then I read their how-to page. They suggest picking a charity you don't agree with or a person you don't like in order to provide extra motivation.

Keep a (fake if need be) smile on your face while talking on the phone. You sound more pleasant. Try it.

Food prep containers: I use teacups and saucers

@rickdob: Thank you so much for recommending AirSet! I have been searching for a long time for something like this!

Once I get to the bottom of my wrapping paper stash, I'm going to start doing this: [www.env.go.jp] (Furushoki, or the Japanese art of wrapping with fabric).

I use my menorah to heat the room.

There are some good tips in there that I've never seen before. The idea for each person to have two sock bags is something I'm going to try. My children's socks have taken over the house, and somehow mine get mixed up in there too, and I've been looking for a solution.

This is so timely.

Wear a watch! I wear watches until I lose them, then I go without one for a long time and am always shocked by how much time I save when I get a new one. Wearing a watch means I don't get places early, I get out of places on time, and I know exactly how much extra time I have to fit something else in. Keeping track

TV and cable are not synonymous. We have never had cable, but we have a nice big television in a prominent spot in our living room. Our family of four watches an average of three hours of TV a week. If we got rid of the tv, we'd probably be paying for DVD rentals, going out to the movies, or paying for other

We buy magnetic paper whenever we see it at the dollar store, and my kids make magnetic "paper" dolls. They make magnetic heads, clothes, shoes, hats, etc., either by drawing them or by cutting out photos, and then they create people with them on the refrigerator. We ended up with so many on the refrigerator that we
