I've heard several versions of this, but yours rings true.  I think I'd tend to agree with you ... that said, he hardly picked an obscure track for the $100,000 challenge.

Most people don't know the first 500-700 (ish) Ferrari 308 GTBs were a fiberglass-bodied cars from the factory. I've been at more than one car show and overheard someone call an authentic 308 a "kit car" because of this.
