I don’t think I’d want to play them again (they’d feel dated), but that was definitely the “golden age of AC” in my opinion. Best characters, settings, and back when they were still trying to put cool puzzles and overarching mythology into the games (which is what really hooked me).

Negative reviews during a beta have their purpose. In this case, they serve to tell the developers what they did wrong and ensure that the game ends up better than the last. As it stands right now, positive reviews from newcomers only encourage mediocrity.
