You haven't encountered Pinchbeck? Oh, you lucky person.

We subscribe only to basic cable so we have a ton of dead channels - usually just black, occasionally gray and static-y. No blue so far.

I am WAY too excited about this movie. And I agree with RedCrown - a particularly good trailer, because it puts us into the middle of the adventure rather than focusing on Bilbo's initial reluctance to join in.

Excellent point. I'm old enough to think of a "dead channel" as gray, but of course future readers won't do so.

Holy heck. Five of my favorite people right up top. Almost every movie would benefit from more Tilda.

If they detonate the fleet, will we see R2D2 fly by again?

If they costumed him as a tribble, the what are you wearing benedict tumblr would have a field day.

Indeed. The coolness factor just in that photo, without all the actors, is in danger of turning into some kind of singularity that will suck in all of fandom.

In principle, I agree, but perhaps Christopher Lee could be at the outer edge of the dogpile? He scares me.

THANK YOU. Jesus H. Fucking Christ the Third, I have been reading these comments and getting more and more furious.

OMG this is adorable.

I heard Neil Gaiman speak a couple of years ago, and among 9 million other things he talked about how, during the 1960s, every British schoolboy would finish his 1/3-pint flask of milk as quickly as possible, then bend the straw and point it at his friends: "Exterminate!" (Funnier if you heard Gaiman tell the story,

My sincerest sympathies. My alma mater managed to produce Justice Alito, Senator Frist, and on and on with the crazed right-wingers, so, yeah. The alumni magazine letters column is often amazing, in a very very bad way.

So did I.

Candles?

Yes. Stop trying to make sense!

A) I agree with others here than the line was intended to be flippant and dismissive, not to be taken literally.

Also I love the fact that, aside from the animation (which got out of sync with reality as the landing got closer), what we were watching last night was, for the most part, a bunch of intense people staring at screens that we mostly couldn't see. Plus eating peanuts. And it was hella exciting. Minimalism wins!

Holy shit, that's amazing!

What Duffin said. Sigh.
