They could morph it into a teachable moment about the debate, but they framed the pan character’s description of bi people as correct, so they kinda took the side of someone who identifies one way telling people who identify a different way, what their identity means.

I’ve never liked Maron more than when I read those comments. He pretty much perfectly explained and shut down the “wah cancel culture” crowd.

The issue is, I think, that there are pan people who say similar things, and bi people consider those people’s framing of their identity as incorrect. So the character was mimicking a thing some people actually say that some bi people disagree with.
