I think you can buy cards without turning into an asshole. I used to split boxes with friends so we can draft and usually just gave whoever what they needed and rolled for whatever no one used, but wanted. I used ebay and other services to buy individual cards and traded amongst my friends for anything I didn't want…

I'll have to see the game before I say anything about him asking for money. If it's amazing or at least enjoyable, I don't see why anyone should complain that he took the proper steps to make a good product.
