As someone who’s spent 20 years working in “Gifted” education - high IQ does not automatically equal “smart.” It means they have the potential - but lots of things, like for instance, ego and fawning fanboys, can make then act very unintelligently.

As mentioned, he was dead - either if you count the game, or just the time involved - he was gone. And wouldn’t have died in the Matrix, leaving them without the same justification they had with Neo and Trinity.
