There are certainly characteristics of youth that carry from generation to generation, but this is the first one to have a handy smart phone to answer any question (why learn anything?) or provide them with an instant escape from reality they don’t feel like coping with.
I can see the logic. plenty of people who will never play the game might check out the movie, and its even more likely with some names behind it. But those same names would not get those same people to play the game, yet would cost a great deal more.
Really disagree on Returns. I mean, I like the movie - but its a great Tim Burton movie while being a fairly terrible version of Batman (smiling as he murders is something I won’t accept from any Batman).
The media isn’t solely responsible, but they played a damned big role.

Screw that attitude. Films, regardless of subject, should have a bare minimum level of competence in story telling. Just saying “its people in costumes we know punching, be happy” is the saddest, reveling-in-being-the-lowest-common-denominator rationale I can think of.
