Since I posted this I read that Gandolfini acted in the pilot, but in a minor role — not in the John Stone character. Still, I kept imagining him playing Stone as a large, shambling, rumpled, sandal-wearing, vulnerable bear.

I've almost never felt the loss of James Gandolfini so acutely. Turtorro is a great actor, but it's never been so obvious that no one could approach the abilities of Gandolfini if he'd played the same role.
