My point is a scummy mechanic wouldn’t rip someone off in that way though. Even if he was hourly. Turning the rotors isn’t any harder than replacing them and if hes hourly the mechanic wouldn’t care about selling the parts or labor. A parts guy or a service writer might rip you off on the parts sale but it wouldn’t be…

I can’t speak for everyone but as far as dealership mechanics go in New England, an hourly position is hard to come by. You generally make more being flat rate but some people like the hourly security. I would imagine all the pep boys type brake shops you’re talking about are hourly though.

At our dealership you get more flat rate time for resurfacing the rotors instead of replacing them. A better analogy would be to be resurfacing rotors that do not need resurfacing instead of replacing brakes that only need to be resurfaced. No mechanic thats flat rate would be doing that.
