THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT!!! Finn and Poe were like “Fuck it we have to do something!” Poe had the realization that he had no chance and ordered a retreat and that was the moment when his arc came full circle and he did what he should have done in the first place.

Exactly, they were probably designed for Orbital bombardment, not close dogfight. Similar things happened in World War 2 where pilots deliberately targeted the payloads of bombers to try and detonate the plane.

Y-Wings would not have a payload of hundreds of Thermal Detonators like that.

Finn sacrificing himself would have ultimately been pointless. There is no way of knowing if he would even damage the thing. That was part of the lesson of the film. Sometimes no matter what you do, you will fail.

Those things were LOADED with Thermal Detonators. It made perfect sense that once armed, a single lucky shot would detonate the payload.

The stupid tactics were kinda why Leia was pissed at Poe. Those bombers were so stupidly fragile that a single TIE Fighter kamikaze took out 3 of them.
