I’m about as gentile as you can get, and even I’ve noticed the thing Silverman’s talking about. I don’t think every actor has to be exactly the same as the character they’re playing necessarily, but when it comes to marginalized groups, maybe try a little harder, Hollywood?

I’m not so sure about the idea that he’s overcompensating. That seems to me like more of a Trump thing, and I think Maher’s smugness has more of an offhand quality that makes me think he really believes deep down he’s just that awesome.
