The reality is, it’s kind of a weird mix. The story takes place in a future Japan, the characters have asian names, but the creator was strongly influenced by western movies and drew his characters to look like Westerners.

He’s clearly some kind of cyborg sent from the future to ruin gaming for mere mortals.

I love how the writers of the novelizations always jump trough hoops to make sense of the nonsense plots of the movies, and this then becomes canon retroactively. Like people keep saying the prequels weren't so bad because X is explained trough Y in the books...
