I think it also makes a big difference that she did it at the Olympics. That’s probably the event that the USWNT gets the most attention. You don’t make your team look like sore losers at the Olympics.

This is all guesswork unless you normalize for passenger mile.

I’m guessing the car wasn’t the only thing the someone was in, hence the overreaction.

Probably because we’re all discovering it at different times.

The venn diagram of fanbases for those games is a model of our solar system.

As an almost 40 something liberal bi chick... I am fucking sick of seeing “trigger warning” in front of every story I read. It is up to me to deal with my shit. I have been through REAL crappy stuff and part of dealing with things is to confront it. College classrooms, for the most part, ARE safe spaces. Debates have

Like, I get the idea of “people should interact with different POVs and sometimes have their preconceived notions about life be challenged” and doing things like teaching controversial/racy material. In that sense, having a safe space where your ideas are never challenged is bad, because the whole point of college

I’m a younger millennial, and are you joking? Safe spaces might be valid but the discussion over them has certainly been cartoonized both by their detractors and supporters and to ignore this fact and the fact that they’re used to browbeat dissent only hurts any attempt to fix social issues.

How many dates does one go on with Elon Musk before he takes you home to meet his mothership?

That’s not at all what I said. I said that it’s not horrible for everyone; I didn’t say it’s wonderful for everyone. It was this line in your comment that drove my response: “you do seemingly have a bunch of servers enduring low key (or more intense) sexual harassment so they can pay the rent or afford their children.”

I have a theory that the world has become so safe that we are collectively losing our self-preservation instincts. With all the simulated danger at places like theme parks and haunted houses combined with the addition of so many safety features in real life, a lot of people don't seem to know what to do when faced

Yes, I’m sure it is similar to many other things, such as alcohol consumption. For a large majority, there is no issue or problem with consuming it on a regular basis. For others, it can be devastating and interrupt all aspects of their lives. I think we should be able to have a nuanced conversation about such issues

Seriously. I feel for Elizabeth Smart but the anti-porn lobby is using our pre-existing sympathy for an abducted rape victim and it’s a gross tactic. Porn = Sex. Sex requires consent. Neither porn nor sex is good or bad in and of itself. Context is always key—for the makers and consumers of pornography.

I feel like free birth control is more necessary or reasonable than free feminine hygiene products. I 100% agree that there shouldn’t be a tax on them, but I don’t really see why they should be free outside of the argument that they should be provided in schools and such. Yes, they are a necessity, but so is food and

Honestly, I just can’t get excited about repealing “tampon taxes.” I live in a state where everything (except, oddly, newspapers and magazines) is subject to the state sales tax. I don’t see the reason for tampons to receive an exemption when other basic necessities (food, medicine, toilet paper, etc.) are also taxed.

¡Los Osos Gigantes!

This emotional argument about manhood or womanhood derails the issue into social constructs. Socially there no need draw a line between man and woman, but if there is a men’s dividion and a women’s division in sports, that line needs to be defended. I wrote about that here,

I’ve seen the NBA comparison used numerous times on this story and it is a ridiculous apples to oranges argument and here’s why.

You do realize that if Semenya’s brain chemistry made her identify as male this would never be an issue right? It’s because elite female atheltes do not perform at the same level as their male counterparts. That’s a physiological fact of life. Compare the mens and women’s world records at any event (whose dominant
