Aren't there servers that only allow the original items? I understand what you mean, and it seems they're getting a bit careless in the items that make it through (bugs, balance issues, etc), though.

I was fine with hats being a purely cosmetic thing, since I really don't care about that aspect of the game, but I was bummed when I found out I'd have to get some eventually in order to enjoy some of the cool set bonuses some classes get.

I think when I was young it was all about the collect-a-thon aspect of Pokemon that appealed to me. Now that I'm older, I found the strategic fighting and teambuilding aspect to be surprisingly deep. However, I just don't have the time to learn every single nuance of it and none of the friends around me play it…
