You have to think like a car dealer. 99% of the time you are thinking about fucking someone. So if he says strap-on, I believe he means it. He probably rubs one out when they sell an $800 undercoating.
The fact that franchises have a protected business model is the real problem. Plus they talk about how great the dealer experience is. If so they will have no problems competing with the Tesla model.

I like the Tesla model, but I still need to do something with my current vehicle, like trade it in. Some type of used car dealer model still needs to exist. Unless that model is CarMax?
