FWIW, I randomly watched two episodes early this morning (donating plasma) without any review or foreknowledge of this show, and absolutely loved the look of the show and the music. My son watched me play through a good majority of P4G on a third play through and he literally broke down ugly-crying when he thought a certain character had died. The characters in that game just felt really special.

It won’t be doing you any favors, but you could choose to only work on the social links of at least three companions and only use them in the party. Or only work on the social links of all party members but skip working on any other ones.

While I feel that’s what I love about the Persona games, you can just not do anything. It would make the game more difficult, but, you don’t have to join clubs, do well in school, or even work on your social links if you don’t want to.
