I was raised in an atheist household (I'm 25 now), and I'm always surprised at how uncommon it is. I know lots of atheists, but all of them came to their atheism as teenagers or adults. I don't know anyone else with atheist parents.

I'm planning for pizza, maybe alcohol (I have a headache already, though, so maybe not) and Twin Peaks.

Yes I was worried it might come off that way, but of course I think what I'm doing is right. Everyone makes the choices they make based on what they think is right. I was trying to bring up the point that my reasons, and many others, had nothing to do with health. And if the omnivore is the one to bring the subject

I really think that vegetarians and vegans need to go through sensitivity training to learn to be more careful about the fragile feelings of meat eaters.

ALSO first time commenter on Jez merely to say how much this article rubbed me the wrong fucking way! As a longtime vegetarian, I go out of my way to be non-confrontational about my diet choices. Even so, I get shit from probably 65% of new people who find out this information. I would be open to explaining my

I'm with you, I've been on the hunt for the perfect "Meat is Murder" shirt for a while, and I love his rants about the British monarchy. But I think he is the personified stereotype of what people think all vegans are like, which I would rather not deal with.

But I'm vegan and I love Morrissey. Like, I'm certain my next tattoo is going to be some of his lyrics. He's strident and kind of an asshole, but he's brilliant and beautiful and is like the crazy uncle I wish I had.

I hear you. Also, the "vegans are pushy fundamentalists" construct. I usually don't tell people about my diet, they eventually notice and ask. Then, I go "yeah, no big deal." And then they go on a tirade about how pushy vegans are and how little we know and where do you get your protein, etc.

"But, whatever. Can somebody run a study that establish a relationship between vegetarianism and smugness?"

Jesus that's annoying. Yes, some vegetarians have a terrible habit of being superior and smug, but it absolutely does not compare to the asshole meat eaters (the meat eaters that are assholes that is) who think

So now we just treat everyone who has different views from us dismissively? That's a good policy for life.

No joke. I'm living in the Deep South now with my vegan partner, and I feel like it's our mission to prove that not all vegans are like Morrissey. But being a vegan diplomat gets exhausting in a place where crawfish and shrimp are considered vegetables.

Damn. Smugness eh? Pretty harsh word. I can't account for other people's pretentious attitudes but personally I can't put my own selfishness, or even health, before the life of another animal. I decided to be a vegetarian when I was a kid, (along with a few friends) because I liked animals, and thought the idea of

Tell me about it. I try NOT to tell people I'm vegan unless I'm backed into a corner - it just always brings down such a shitstorm.

Ughghghg, if I had a dollar for every time someone finds out I'm vegan and is all "I really wish I could be vegan, I just love cheese to much..." Shut up, shut up! I didn't tell you to make you feel guilty! We all make our choices! *stomps away*

Yes, it's hard not to be anxious and depressed when one thinks about the decline of rights for women, the melting polar ice caps, the fact that 50% of this country seems to be Marine Todd personified. *sigh*

"Can somebody run a study that establish a relationship between vegetarianism and smugness?"

Vegetarians reported higher levels of impairment from disorders, chronic diseases, and "suffer significantly more often from anxiety/depression."

Next time I click on Jezebel science analysis, I'll just cut the middle man and get straight to banging my head against a wall.

Wow, this was a needlessly smug post. How about you do you and leave us vegetarians to do us?

Yup. My initial reaction was THEY MAKE BREAD WITH HUMAN HAIR. I ask about stuff like bread all the time. Suck it - I'm paying and knowing that shit is your job. I work in retail and get stupid questions a million times a week, but asking about whether food is veggie is pretty standard.
