That’s fair, and I generally agree, but I think that in either approach there is going to be a kind of liminal space between current law and the ideal you outline. Unfortunately, right now that in-between state is one that can be either passively or actively detrimental to trans folks.

I mean, maybe things work differently in the UK. but in the US judges do have the ability to create precedent, which in this case could include allowing him to register as “parent” rather than forcing him to use the term “mother”.

I have heard very few cases of trans people being hurt because medical professionals didn’t know their assigned sex at birth. I’ve heard quite a few cases where they were mistreated due to their trans status, but none at all like you describe. I would argue that it’s simply not an issue.

I don’t see active hate, but there is definitely malice in falling back and saying, “oh, we have to do this, it would be too hard to change the system.” It isn’t the same as “just following orders”, but it definitely exists on the same spectrum as that.

Whose business is it who gave birth to a child anyway? What issue is it what you call the parents on the birth certificate so long as they’re there? What’s the practical benefit of insisting on misgendering trans men this way?
