Yes yes if we’re being precise about it a rim is part of a wheel and not a whole wheel, but calling wheels “rims” is a common-enough turn of phrase that correcting it is getting farther into the weeds than is really necessary. Of all the hills to die on, do you really want to make this yours?
Carbon fiber wheels have been around for a while, yes. But the article is about how this company was able to produce these wheels at scale, using more automation in an assembly line-like environment.
A few people I went to high school with a dozen years ago had these. If this was the “get-your-teenager-a-cheapish-car-they-will-think-is-cool” car then it certainly explains the damage.
