It looks more upbeat than the book, which might be good; but the images (is it the lighting? the type of camera?) look a little flat, a little lacking in depth.

Yeah, I'm psyched about Mad Max—it's crazy how favorably it has been received by critics. (I tried to revisit the original movies in anticipation, but I gave up on that quickly—I have vague but fond memories, but a complete rewatch with those production values would be a little painful now.)

The premise is simple and good, an apt but not too pat metaphor for a certain thing. The world of the film comes across as very lived-in and real and the ties between the different characters are not cookie-cutter.
