When riding the 2nd-3rd class rails in Pakistan and India you will find vendors selling chains and locks to secure your luggage. I saw someone tie their luggage and themselves to their seat with said chain and lock when asleep.

@Rob Oakes: To your point about issues because network traffic. I keep a 10/100/1000 switch behind my entertainment rack, and for things streaming video, or ps3 network gameplay I use the wired network. As for streaming from the internet, a 50mbps internet connection helps.

As others have said, this technique has been use for a very long time, even in cinema. Off hand, there's a scene in West Side Story that uses it.
