As an astronomer, I always find it weird how the press report on a new discovery. In this case, every article I've read misses all of the cool parts, and focuses on SPACE DIAMOND!

I live right outside of clubland in Toronto in a ground floor apartment. Once I found an iPhone wrapped in napkins outside my front door. I still have no idea why (a) drunk clubber or (b) phone thief would have done that and then forgotten about it.

According to the NYT article, it uses microwaves. They are non-ionizing and thus safe at low intensities. This is unlike some of the TSA which use X-rays, which are ionizing radiation and something we should be concerned about.

My high school didn't have any sports teams, so we would have pep rallies for the Academic Decathlon team. They did win the state championship every year, but still ugh. I made friends with the librarian and did my homework in the library during the assembly. It was a better use of my time.
