I think at the time it was the friction between the complexity of the invention versus the communication means of the time. I remember that the fancy private catholic kindergarten my parents sent me to, once sent a report to my parents that I was a well-behaved child except I constantly had my hand in my pants.

In my color theory classes in painting, we used CMY pigments because it gave better color accuracy. The teacher made us do different exercises to prove it was better than the regular Yellow, Blue, Red.
