I know the US has few to no restrictions on speech, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that changed in the next 10 years, now that we’ve seen (and will probably see again) how influencial and potentially dangerous these lies can be, and how unprepared so many people are to distinguish fact from fiction.

You’re probably right. Trump, at least, almost certainly didn’t know about the possible political implications of the call. He doesn’t seem to know much about the world at all.
