I worked for a news organization (not WaPo; much smaller but in the DC area). Covering and reporting news is not cheap. It requires people, who need to be paid for their time. It requires support staff to edit, lay out, fact check, publish both print and virtual stories, do graphics or whatever other supporting…

Like all print media, WaPo faces declining revenues and cannot afford to give away the fruits of their journalism. They spend huge amounts of money actually investigating and reporting the news, unlike many websites that basically curate and re-package with comments the efforts of the main stream media.
