To be completely charitable, I think people want to do something, but when something horrible happens, especially if it's far away, it's hard to channel that energy in a way that's helpful right away.

Yeah, I really despair that any kind of improvement will ever be made here and I'm sort of even getting, I don't know, really cynical about how we're so good at dealing with the aftermath of these situations—except for the part where we literally don't do a single thing to prevent the next one.

I don't think most Americans have guns. In fact, even though the number of guns owned by Americans is high, the percentage of Americans who own guns has been decreasing for about 40 years now. (In the mid-70s, over half [53.7%] of Americans owned guns; by 2014 it was down to 31%.)
