That's right. After about 25 - 35k miles, engines need valves ground and other work. Around 75k they were done. On the other hand, appliances lasted much longer and were serviceable, so they can be fixed rather than replaced. No one back then would buy something cheap and be fine with it lasting only a short while…
Not to mention, in the 50's you had to show up at closing with 20% plus closing costs in cold, hard cash. No %5 or %0 down we have today.

The problem in business when you are dealing with competing ideas, no one is going to "give" you anything. You have to politically take it or find a way to earn it through persuasion. That persuasion could be that your idea has the most merit, or just about any reason that changes peoples' opinion.
