Daytime, drive the Taconic State Parkway. It's way off season but still a nice trip.
Night time, drive two of the most terrifying roads in the area — the interborough parkway and FDR drive. These are mobbed from about 6AM to midnight.

You cant go wrong with any parkway, but stay off any interstates…
